A nurse with a history of serving patients at Detroit's Sinai-Grace Hospital is under a serious allegations, accumulating multiple criminal sex charges. 47-year-old Wilfredo Figueroa-Berrios of Wayne faces accusations both as a nurse and outside his professional environment. According to ClickOnDetroit, the nurse is currently tangled up in a case involving the sexual assault of a 41-year-old woman within the confines of a porta-potty on May 9, near Grand Circus Park.
Figueroa-Berrios entered a not guilty plea to third- and fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct charges during his arraignment held on Thursday. His bond was set at $100,000. Upcoming court proceedings include a bond hearing scheduled for September 8, followed by a probable cause hearing on September 15 and a preliminary examination on September 22, as reported by FOX 2 Detroit. These court dates will thoroughly examine whether there is enough evidence for the system to move forward to trial.
In a separate case, allegations of sexual misconduct involving a hospital patient led to three counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct and two counts of fourth-degree being filed by the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office. The reported incident occurred on August 18 at the same facility where the accused was employed. For this case, bond was set at $50,000 personal recognizance, with a GPS tether ordered as a condition of release.
The defense has sought to challenge the prosecution's case by casting doubt on the reliability of a central witness, claiming the individual was “was intoxicated at six times the legal limit.” Additionally, the defense described many of Figueroa-Berrios’ patients as “drug addicts and people with mental illness,” aiming to raise questions about the credibility of any statements or allegations they may have made, as ClickOnDetroit quotes the attorney.
Yet, the prosecution is standing firm with additional disturbing revelations emerging. Assistant prosecutor Grace Broughton described the defendant as a pronounced "threat to the community," targeting those in vulnerable positions within the sanctuary of the hospital. "This man does have a modus operandi; he victimizes victims who are vulnerable, in vulnerable states who come seeking help in the hospital," said Broughton. Prosecutors are currently reviewing at least four additional cases, with the potential for more individuals to come forward. Legal proceedings for Figueroa-Berrios remain ongoing. as per report by WXZY.
