A dramatic rescue took place on Mackinac Island Sunday afternoon when a man, prohibited by law from cliff climbing, found himself in a precarious situation hanging onto the edge of a precipice. According to ClickOnDetroit, the Mackinac Island Fire Department was summoned at 1:57 p.m. with reports of the man's fall that possibly resulted in a broken arm. As the rescue operation was set in motion, it became a race against time as the individual was reportedly "slipping and couldn't hold on much longer."

The Mackinac Island Fire Department orchestrated both a technical rescue from above and a ladder rescue from below. Firefighters were prepared for a potential high-angle rescue; however, Firefighter Joshua Carley of the ladder crew ultimately reached the man first. The fire department disclosed, per ClickOnDetroit, "It was said he had about 10 seconds left before letting go," an assertion underscoring the urgency of the situation. Once secured, the man was handed over to the awaiting EMS team and is now in stable condition.

UpNorthLive noted that the fire department executed the rescue with Squad 1 ready to deploy a technical line from the top while Ladder 2 approached the man from the road below. The firefighter’s swift climb up the ladder ultimately brought the man down to safety. The incident is a repeat offense against the climbing prohibition in place on Mackinac's cliffs, marking the second such rescue operation this year and the tenth in the last fifteen years.

The assistance from the Department of Public Works staff was highlighted by the fire department, as relayed by WOODTV, their efforts were crucial in locating the dangling man. MIFD Fire Chief Jason St. Onge noted, "the man was turned over to EMS." He thus echoes the close call of the operation.
