A fatal crash in the east Las Vegas area last night has resulted in the death of a pedestrian and the arrest of the driver involved. The collision occurred near Nellis Boulevard and Stewart Avenue at approximately 6:40 p.m., as confirmed by FOX5 Vegas. The driver, identified as 21-year-old Parker Carreras, is currently being held on a charge of reckless driving resulting in death.
According to a news release from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, obtained by News 3 LV, the 2001 Ford Mustang operated by Carreras was moving "at a high rate of speed" when it struck the 34-year-old male victim as he was crossing the road next to a median. The area where the incident took place is known for its busy traffic and it's not currently known if the pedestrian was within a marked or implied crosswalk. Prison records indicate Carreras remains in custody and is expected to appear in court Friday afternoon.
Although the precise circumstances surrounding the crash are still under investigation, police have noted that impairment does not appear to be a contributing factor in this tragic event. 8 News Now reported that the pedestrian received critical care upon being transported to the hospital but was ultimately pronounced dead. The name of the deceased has not been released pending family notification.
This latest casualty brings the number of traffic-related deaths within the jurisdiction of the LVMPD to 110 for the year, marking a concerning statistic for the city. The department continues to investigate the crash, urging motorists and pedestrians alike to exercise caution in this densely populated region of east Las Vegas.
