Philadelphia has announced the appointment of Eleni Belisonzi as the new Director of its Neighborhood Wellness Court (NWC) Initiative, a key component in the city's efforts to improve the lives of those grappling with substance use disorders and associated challenges. According to a recent City of Philadelphia press release, Belisonzi, with her solid background in public service, will lead the charge in strategizing the expansion and enhancement of NWC operations.
Adam Geer, the city's Chief Public Safety Director, highlighted the necessity of building upon ongoing successes, noting that in recent years, "homicides down roughly 80 percent in Kensington" and with fatal overdoses on a national decline, it is essential to not "rest on these successes, but continue to build on them," as mentioned in City of Philadelphia press release. Under Belisonzi's leadership, the initiative seeks to sustain the improvement observed in the Kensington neighborhood, reflecting the broader vision for a safer, more sustainable Philadelphia.
NWC, established in January 2025, is an innovative program providing immediate support following an arrest with essential services and resources to address underlying issues. The Kensington Wellness Support Center (KWSC), located at B Street and Lehigh Avenue, offers immediate pre-court medical care, comprehensive needs assessments, and options for diversion and treatment programs. The 24th/25th Police District on Whitaker Avenue will be where participants attend court proceedings if necessary.
According to the City of Philadelphia press release, Judge Joffie C. Pittman III from the Philadelphia Municipal Court expressed his confidence in Belisonzi, stating, "as a leader with a commitment to justice and a strong work ethic," Belisonzi is a welcome addition to the team. Despite being tasked with improving the quality of life for Philadelphians daily, the Philadelphia Police Department recognizes the challenges. Having strong leadership in place through Belisonzi's role is seen as a direct investment in the address of those challenges, Police Commissioner Kevin J. Bethel concurred.
In her remarks, Belisonzi affirmed her commitment to serving Philadelphia's vulnerable populations and improving the operational efficacy of NWC. With a solid track record from her time at the Municipal Court Unit in the District Attorney’s Office, she brings a wealth of experience that is poised to significantly impact this public service domain. The Parker Administration has reinforced the importance of NWC as a cornerstone in the Mayor's plan to fortify Kensington and the larger Philadelphia community.
