Eli Lilly and Co. will build a $6.5 billion manufacturing plant in Generation Park, Houston, increasing from an earlier $5.9 billion plan. The project, confirmed by CEO David Ricks with Governor Greg Abbott, includes a state-approved tax abatement through Texas' JETI program, according to KHOU.

Lilly will build a plant on a 236-acre site about 10 miles east of George Bush Intercontinental Airport in northeast Houston. The project is expected to create 4,000 construction jobs and 615 permanent positions, supporting the area’s biomanufacturing industry.

Lilly is opening a new manufacturing facility in Houston as part of its plan to expand U.S. production with four new sites and $50 billion in investments since 2020. The Houston plant will produce orforglipron, an injectable GLP-1 drug, and may also make other small molecule medicines for cancer and neuroscience. David A. Ricks said, “Our new Houston site will enhance Lilly’s ability to manufacture orforglipron at scale, and if approved, help fulfill the medicine’ potential as a metabolic health treatment for tens of millions of people worldwide who prefer the ease of a pill that can be taken without food or water restrictions,” as mentioned by Houston Chronicle. Governor Abbott attended a press conference with Lilly representatives.
