Lake County's expectant mothers are scrambling to rearrange their childbirth plans as UF Health Leesburg prepares to shutter its Labor and Delivery unit by October 15th. The hospital cited a decline in births and challenges in staff recruitment as reasons for the closure, according to a report by WFTV. UF Health Leesburg has seen a significant decrease in births since the pandemic, which appears to have been a critical factor in their decision.
The closure means women like Morgan Browne, who spoke to WESH, now have to quickly find new care providers and delivery locations. A recent mother and expecting again, Browne expressed her dismay: "It's already stressful enough, and now I have to think, OK, a new provider?" She is uncertain if her current doctor will be able to get privileges at other hospitals in time for her delivery.
While UF Health is offering training and transfer opportunities to its Labor and Delivery staff, the community's concerns are growing, particularly for those in low-income or transportation-challenged households. South Lake Hospital in Clermont and Waterman Hospital in Tavares have been identified as alternate locations, but they could be up to an hour away for some Lake County residents, potentially complicating emergencies for expectant mothers.
