A Farmington Hills police officer, Michael Rybinski, has been placed on paid administrative leave after being charged with criminal sexual conduct involving a female cadet. He faces one count of third-degree criminal sexual conduct, punishable by up to 15 years in prison, and three counts of fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct, each carrying a penalty of up to two years, according to Audacy.
Following allegations of sexual assault against a cadet while off-duty, Rybinski was removed from active law enforcement duties. "When the Department learned in June that the member was under criminal investigation, he was immediately placed on administrative duty in a non-enforcement role," and later, when charges were expected, he was placed on leave and his law enforcement authority was suspended, as reported by The Detroit News.
Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald, praised the victim, saying, “Under no circumstances is this alleged behavior ever acceptable. I applaud this victim for her courage to come forward.” McDonald’s statement says that on June 16, Rybinski allegedly called the victim claiming he was drunk and needed a ride, during which he attempted to kiss and grope her against her will. Rybinski pleaded innocent in court, and through his attorney Colin McLaughlin said, "We look forward for a day in court, and we intend to take this to trial," as mentioned by Detroit Free Press.
