Early Wednesday morning, a tragic collision occurred near the Los Angeles-Glendale border near Griffith Park, leading to a complete shutdown of the northbound 5 Freeway at the 134 Freeway exchange. ABC7 reports that the incident, which involved two vehicles, was first reported shortly after 3 a.m. Sadly, one person was trapped in a car that subsequently caught fire and was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to NBC Los Angeles, when California Highway Patrol officers arrived on the transition road from the westbound 134 Freeway to the northbound 5 Freeway, they discovered a BMW sedan and a gray sedan blocking several lanes. Officer Sergio Garcia, at the time unable to immediately provide the name, age, or gender of the victim.

A Sigalert closed all lanes of the transition from the 134 to the 5 freeways for two hours as the CHP investigated the collision. Traffic was rerouted to San Fernando Road, NBC Los Angeles noted.
