Four individuals were arrested on suspicion of human smuggling after Bexar County Sheriff’s deputies observed a suspicious exchange at Love's Travel Stop. The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office reported that the incident, which took place on the Southwest Side near Interstate 35 and Fischer Road, involved the transfer of individuals from a semi-truck to two separate vehicles. This occurred at approximately 10:30 p.m. on Sept. 12, an event later confirmed by deputies who subsequently stopped the vehicles and took four migrants into custody, one of whom required hospital treatment for a leg injury.
The individuals arrested were identified as Chelsea Bravo, 29; Julian Garza, 23; Steven Escamila, 36; and Ormond Tolbert, 64. They face charges ranging from organized criminal activity to smuggling of persons. According to a KSAT report, Garza is also charged with a violation of protective order, while Escamilla faces an additional charge for an immigration violation related to re-entry.
Details provided by the arresting deputies from the Gang Unit, K9, and Human Exploitation and Intelligence Unit indicated that they had been monitoring the Love's Truck Stop at the 11300 block of S IH-35 Frontage Road when they spotted the suspected smuggling activity. The recovered migrants are reported to be from San Luis Potosí and Matamoros, Tamaulipas in Mexico, and Guatemala.
The four suspects have been booked into the Bexar County Adult Detention Center. Concerning their apprehension, the operation sheds light on the continuing challenges of human smuggling in the region. FOX San Antonio's article highlighted that the truck driver was also taken into custody without incident from the scene. As for migrants involved, they were identified and are receiving necessary support and attention from authorities. The case remains under investigation as officials work to dismantle the networks perpetuating these illegal operations.
