A tragic turn of events unfolded in Midtown Manhattan when a German couple visiting New York City were involved in a fatal hit-and-run incident. The couple was struck by a minivan driver who then fled the scene, leading to the death of a 50-year-old woman and leaving her 55-year-old husband with a fractured skull. The man was later transported to Bellevue Hospital and is reported to be in stable condition, CBS News New York reports.
The incident took place near the intersection of East 40th Street and Fifth Avenue on Wednesday afternoon, at a time when the sidewalks teem with both the pulse of the city and the tranquility of unsuspecting passersby, looking forward to their evenings the driver reversed the vehicle at a high speed, pinning the couple against a box truck, in a tragic disregard for the crosswalk the couple was rightfully using, as reported by Gothamist.
Authorities were able to apprehend the suspect, 40-year-old Mohamed Abouzaid from the Bronx, after initially detaining him several blocks away from the crash at West 38th Street and Eighth Avenue. Abouzaid has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death and failing to yield to pedestrians.
Amid the bustling city life where familiarity often breeds a casual detachment from the lives that pass by, a vendor named Houssain Coly provided his thoughts nearby where the crash occurred, saying, "People ... have to be patient, you know. You never know where an accident is going to be," in an interview with CBS News New York. "It's very sad. People come to enjoy the city, to see New York, obviously vacation, and these things happen," his voice carrying the weight of a community not unscathed by the randomness of tragedy.
