Governor Greg Abbott has appointed Jarred Shaffer as the new Director of the Texas Advanced Nuclear Office (TANO), as announced just yesterday. In this role, Shaffer is tasked to not only lead, but also to swiftly enhance the support for advanced nuclear project development in the state.
Linked to Shaffer's appointment is the management of a significant financial initiative, the Texas Advanced Nuclear Development Fund. This fund commands an impressive $350 million, designed to stimulate growth and competition within the state's nuclear energy sector. "TANO and the Texas Advanced Nuclear Development Fund will increase Texas' investment in an all-of-the-above energy approach to solidify Texas as the world's energy hub," Governor Abbott was quoted in the state's announcement.
Shaffer, hailing from Flower Mound, holds a diverse portfolio within the energy and policy sectors, having been an Advisor in the Office of the Governor. His career trail spans from legislative work in the Texas House and Senate, to involvement with transportation and environmental quality, up to international grassroots development work in Argentina. His academic background includes a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations and Global Studies/Government from The University of Texas at Austin, coupled with studies in Spanish and Latin American Studies.
The legislative roots of TANO trace back to June, when House Bill 14 was ratified, formally establishing the office and fund. According to the state's communication, this bill synergizes with Governor Abbott's previous directives, which include charges to the Public Utility Commission to effectively utilize advanced nuclear reactors in Texas. As the newly minted head of TANO, Shaffer's deep energy expertise positions him to not only navigate but also to effectively disrupt the traditional bureaucratic maze that often accompanies such high-stakes regulatory environments.
