
In a recent move by Governor Greg Abbott, the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission (TABC) has seen a significant shake-up with the appointment of Robert Eckels as its new chair, a term that will continue until November 15, 2027, according to an official announcement by the Office of the Texas Governor. The Commission is tasked with the oversight and regulation of all aspects of the alcoholic beverage industry within the state of Texas, ensuring compliance with legislation and fostering responsible business practices among licensees.
Eckels, a resident of Spring, Texas, brings to the table a multifaceted background as an attorney with Husch Blackwell LLP and serving as general counsel for Greffex, Inc.; his previous political experience includes six terms in the Texas State Legislature and a term as the County Judge of Harris County, during which he also found himself in advisory roles to President George W. Bush and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, his resume boasting manifold memberships in state bars encompassing Texas, New York, Colorado, and D.C., and, to add to his accolades, he is a Certified Fraud Examiner and board leadership fellow of the National Association of Corporate Directors.
His previous engagements have included serving as chair of the Texas County and District Retirement System and holding presidential office in the Texas County Judges and Commissioners Association, as well as participating as a board member of the Texas Association of Counties. His expertise extends into other areas as he chaired the energy, environment, and land use committee and served on the board for the National Association of Counties, these roles highlighting his broad experience in public service and governance.
Moreover, Eckels is noted for his community involvement through his membership in the Rotary Club of Houston and his presidency of K9s 4 Cops, in addition to contributing to the International Committee of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, his educational background is rooted in the state with a Bachelor of Science in Technology from the University of Houston and a Juris Doctor from South Texas College of Law, this appointment underscores the Governor's initiative to equip the Commission with diverse and experienced leadership.
