North Carolina Governor Josh Stein has recently recognized the extensive contributions of Joey Hopkins, the outgoing Secretary of Transportation, praising his commitment through natural disasters and applauding his successor, Daniel Johnson, a decorated Navy veteran. In an official announcement, the Governor expressed gratitude for Hopkins' extension of service post-Hurricane Helene and celebrated the near-total restoration of the state's roadways.
Hopkins, wrapping up his tenure that began in October 2023, has been with the Department of Transportation for over 30 years, lauded for his work in advancing North Carolina's Strategic Prioritization Process which elevated the state's infrastructure and economic growth. According to a statement obtained by the Governor's Office, Hopkins noted, "It has been an honor to serve as Secretary of Transportation, and I am grateful to all the North Carolinians who put their trust in our team."
Daniel Johnson steps into the role as Hopkins' successor with a resumé that includes experience as NCDOT's Deputy Secretary and General Counsel and a history of service as a surface warfare officer. His accolades include receiving the Navy and Marine Corps Medal, a recognition for heroism. "Secretary Hopkins leaves a legacy of leadership that I can only hope to continue," Johnson told the Governor's Office. "We must continue the task of building a transportation system that meets the needs of our growing state, and I am eager to get to work."
Johnson's background in law and his service in the military are assets Stein is counting on to advance transportation in North Carolina. Under Johnson's impending leadership, the focus will be on fortifying infrastructure in western North Carolina and ushering the state into a future of transportation that caters to increasing populations.
