Residents in Jacksonville and beachgoers along the coasts of Southeast Georgia and Northeast Florida should exercise caution as the National Weather Service (NWS) has extended a high rip current risk warning through Wednesday evening. According to the NWS Rip Current Statement, dangerous rip currents are expected to affect the area, posing a serious threat to swimmers.
The alert specifically identifies Coastal Nassau, Coastal Duval, Coastal Flagler, Northeast Coastal St. Johns, Southeast Coastal St. Johns, Coastal Glynn, and Coastal Camden regions. Conditions are set to visibly remain mostly sunny with temperatures climbing near 90 degrees today, and the added humidity will make it feel substantially warmer. Staying hydrated and finding shade when possible will surely help to avoid heat-related stress as locals and visitors alike look to enjoy the balmy weather.
In a statement, the Rip Current Statement by the NWS warned, "Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water." This hazard highlights the importance of swimming in designated areas where lifeguards are present and being mindful of ocean conditions. The forecast does show a potential for intermittent showers and thunderstorms later in the week, which could affect beach conditions further.
For those planning to visit the beaches, safety precautions remain important. The NWS advises swimmers to stay near lifeguards and be aware of risks before entering the water. If caught in a rip current, people should float instead of swimming against it. Swimming parallel to the shore may help in escaping, and signaling for help is advised if unable to get free.
