A 63-year-old man died on Saturday after a tragic fall from the Sauk Mountain Trail, as confirmed by the Skagit County Sheriff's Office. The man was hiking with a group of eight when he slipped, plummeting an estimated 150 to 200 feet. Despite immediate efforts by other hikers and bystanders to perform CPR, the man was pronounced dead at the scene by the medical team that subsequently arrived, KING5 reported.
This incident on the Sauk Mountain, a peak rising 5,545 feet and known for its steep and narrow paths adorned with exposed switchbacks, called attention to the dangers of such trails. "The man‘s identity had not been released as of Saturday evening," stated Sgt. Steve Gonzales of the Skagit County sheriff’s office, according to an article by The Seattle Times. The event remains subject to ongoing inquiries.
Earlier in the month, the Cascades witnessed similar misfortunes. On September 7, Andrew Wong, 37, from Long Island, New York, met his end after a catastrophic fall near Dragontail Peak in the Enchantments. This marks the second death in this notorious hiking region within September, further highlighting the inherent risks of high-altitude treks in the Pacific Northwest.
The Skagit County Sheriff's Office has not disclosed additional information regarding the latest incident. Past accidents on the same trail, including fatalities in 2017 and 2018, have underscored the potential perils associated with mountaineering in the area. For the current investigation and information about hiking safety, the public can refer to the KIRO 7 report on the matter.
