Hillsborough County residents might want to prepare for detours as the intersection at Ash Avenue and South 83rd Street will close for up to two months. According to a Hillsborough County Public Works announcement, the closure beginning October 22 is part of a larger initiative, the Progress Village Regional Drainage Improvements project, meant to address ongoing roadway flooding and enhance water quality in the area.
The intersection shutdown will follow the reopening of another local thoroughfare, Progress Boulevard at 83rd Street. While this traffic adjustment may inconvenience some, the effort is crucial for infrastructure upgrades. Officials say the road should reopen by the late 2025, or early 2026, but as always, the timeline may change due to, inclement weather and other unforeseen construction delays.
As a workaround during the closure, the county has recommended that drivers use South 85th Street, Fir Drive, and South 82nd Street. These alternative routes will be clearly marked with road signage to guide commuters around the construction site. Additionally, those interested in understanding more about this project can partake in a virtual public engagement event hosted by the county. The Hillsborough Engagement & Education Hub provides a platform for residents to learn and comment on the upcoming changes, with the public comment period open until Friday. Details can be found on the county's website.
The county is prepping to take this intersection offline with a formal request for the 60-day closure on the docket for the Board of County Commissioners' Oct. 15, 2025 meeting. Those looking for more information or having specific inquiries can reach out directly to Hillsborough County Public Works by calling (813) 635-5400.
