Repair work has started this week on the Market Bridge along the Heights MKT trail in Houston. The bridge was closed because of structural concerns after a winter storm caused loose construction equipment to collide with it. ABC13 reported that the initial collision did not damage the bridge, but it revealed underlying problems that led to its closure.

The Houston City Council approved over $1.1 million for bridge repairs. Parts of the bridge have already been demolished to allow for a reconstruction process expected to take three months, according to CW39. The work focuses on safety and maintaining access, especially with the upcoming FIFA 2026 World Cup, which is expected to increase visitors in Houston.

Houston’s Market Bridge will be reconstructed after local authorities approved funding to address safety and infrastructure concerns. Emmanuel Nunez, founder of non-profit A Tale of Two Bridges, told ABC13, "Because these are no longer trafficked (areas), these are dead ends and these are causing huge security issues," and urban planner Ed Pettitt said, "I think that we are going to be in deep trouble if we're bringing visitors and tourists from around the world to FIFA 2026 next year and we don't have the safety and maintenance issues of these trails under control." The bridge is part of the city’s recreational network and is used for walking, biking, and other activities.
