Houston schools received national and state recognition in 2026. Spring Branch Academic Institute was ranked among the top 25 public elementary and K-12 schools in the U.S., noted by CW39 for its structure that integrates different grade levels across campuses. Carnegie Vanguard High School ranked 4 in Texas for gifted-and-talented students, while Kinder High School for the Performing and Visual Arts and DeBakey High School for Health Professions were also listed among the top 20 public high schools in the state, according to Houston Chronicle.
Niche rankings use Department of Education data and student reviews. Luke Skurman, founder and CEO of Niche, said, "Our K-12 rankings bring together rigorous data and real experiences from students, parents and educators." CW39 reported that nearly one in twelve U.S. public schools had enrollment drops of 20% or more from 2019 to 2023. Some Houston schools received high rankings despite these trends.
Several Houston schools ranked highly, including Katy ISD's Seven Lakes High School, Fort Bend ISD's Clements High School, and iUniversity Prep, which ranked number 8 among virtual schools, as mentioned by Houston Chronicle. The rankings show areas of strong performance within Houston’s school system.
