At the Quantum World Congress International Dinner, Howard County Executive Calvin Ball took center stage to showcase the county's advancements and ambitions in the realm of quantum science and technology. Firmly planting Howard County on the global map, Ball spoke on its leadership in cyber and quantum sectors, emphasizing a future that is, in his own words, "NOW." With a reported audience of international Heads of State and leading industry figures, Ball's proclamation wasn't just empty words but rather a testament to the strategic maneuvers unfolding back home. The Howard County Government's release quoted Ball, asserting Howard County's forward march in innovation.
Located strategically between Baltimore and Washington, D.C., Howard County has leveraged its geography to become a nexus of cybersecurity and technology efforts. With Maryland's comprehensive quantum strategy setting a national pace, Ball underlined the county's significant contribution. Home to key quantum assets like the University of Maryland and Johns Hopkins University, the county nests an ecosystem ripe for progress and possibilities.
It seems the county is as committed to building infrastructure as it is to fostering human talent. Ball recounted the establishment of an Innovation District through the redevelopment of Columbia Gateway and lauded the creation of the largest county-owned public fiber network in Maryland. This infrastructure, as per Ball’s vision, aims to satisfy the data demands of technologies like quantum computing and AI. Ball also touched on the educational investments made during his tenure, highlighting his administration's per-pupil investing as among the nation’s highest. Moreover, Howard Community College’s upcoming $11 million Workforce Development and Trades Center, slated for completion in 2026, is set to provide students with hands-on experience in sought-after fields like cybersecurity.
