A Redford Township civilian seeking to responsibly dispose of a hand grenade led to a temporary lockdown of the local police department, Township Hall, and 17th District Court. The individual transported the ordnance to the police headquarters yesterday afternoon, prompting a swift response by the Michigan State Police Bomb Squad, as reported by The Detroit News.
Following protocol, the Redford Township Police Department, along with the adjacent buildings, were secured for less than 30 minutes while the bomb squad assessed the situation, it was revealed that the grenade was determined to be an inert military ordnance afterward the device was taken by state police for disposal. This incident has become part of a series of similar events involving grenades in Metro Detroit, as per FOX 2 Detroit, another hand grenade had been brought to a Flint police post in late last month.
In response to these events, Redford Township Police issued a warning advising the public on proper protocol upon finding potential explosives: "If you find what you believe to be any form of explosive, DO NOT touch it or bring it to the police department. Exit the building, move to an area away from the building, and call 911," a message that has been reiterated following past discoveries, which were cited by CBS Detroit.
