In a recent effort to bolster community safety, Jacksonville Fire Rescue Department (JFRD) teamed up with city leadership to spread awareness on fire prevention. This initiative comes shortly after a rescue by the Station 7 crew, who saved three people from a house fire on Division Street. The incident, shared on JFRD’s social media, highlighted the vital role of working smoke alarms in residential safety.
In collaboration with Mayor Donna Deegan and Fire Chief Percy Golden, JFRD launched a door-to-door campaign to raise awareness about fire safety. During the outreach, they spoke with residents about the importance of regularly testing smoke detectors. According to a social media post by JFRD, having a functioning smoke alarm "cut the risk of dying in a fire by more than half." A misstep, the firefighters, providing a potentially life-saving service, were invited into homes to assess the need for new alarms.
The JFRD has reiterated their commitment to community safety through their Prevention Division, which has been actively involved in these educational efforts. They have offered to support residents in maintaining their smoke alarms by testing, replacement, and installation services. The reminder to “Test yours monthly, replace them every 10 years, and if you need help, JFRD can install them at no cost,” the department's post reads.
Residents can reach out to the fire department by calling 904-630-CITY to inquire about obtaining free smoke alarms and installation.
