The Jacksonville Jaguars emerged triumphant in their season-opening game against the Carolina Panthers, proving their offseason moves might indeed be steering them in the right direction. The Jaguars secured a 26-10 victory at EverBank Stadium under the watchful eye of their new head coach, Liam Coen, whose debut has been marked with success. Coach Coen earned his place as just the second in franchise history to win out the gate, "Really cool to be standing up here after a win, but I was just really proud to be their coach today. The way we competed, the way we hit, now, is it perfect? Absolutely not, you are frustrated with the penalties that have continued to bite us in the butt," Coen said, in a statement obtained by News4JAX.
Despite some delays due to weather, the Jaguars offense, led by quarterback Trevor Lawrence, pulled through with Lawrence throwing for 178 yards including a touchdown and an interception. The city's football aficionados should be particularly ecstatic, as the team's rejuvenated ground attack amassed over 200 rushing yards. The standout performance came from running back Travis Etienne Jr., who dazzled fans with 143 yards on 16 carries. However, converting on third downs was a key to the Jaguars' victory, "It’s obvious something I know we need to improve on, so emphasizing that in the offseason. We ran some good stuff against Carolina’s defense, guys were in the right spot, right time, and I was able to give it to them," Lawrence reflected, according to a post-game interview by the Jaguars' official website.
While the limelight strayed towards Lawrence and Etienne, the Jaguars' defense refused to be outdone, creating turnovers that played a pivotal role in shaping the game's momentum. Rookie phenom Travis Hunter, who took snaps both on offense and defense, also made a significant impact, despite the Jaguars dealing with continuous penalties. Coen expressed, "That we did overcome at times. We can’t do those things and expect to win," in an interview with News4JAX.
On the other side of the gridiron, Carolina's young quarterback Bryce Young struggled, posting 154 yards with a touchdown and succumbing to two interceptions and a fumble. The loss adds to Young's history of challenging season openers, and despite the setback, he maintained a forward-thinking attitude, "Obviously no one likes to lose, but it’s Week 1. We’re going to watch it (Monday). We’re going to wear it. We’re going to see where we can grow, and after that, we’re going to flush it," Young told ESPN.
