Jury selection begins today in the murder trial of Sarah Hartsfield, who is accused of giving her husband, Joseph Hartsfield, a fatal insulin overdose. The case started in early 2023 at their Chambers County home, and medical examiners said he died from toxic levels of insulin, as reported by KHOU.
According to Click2Houston, prosecutors say Sarah Hartsfield ignored a warning about her husband Joseph’s low blood sugar and delayed calling 911 after finding him unresponsive. They listed more than 80 witnesses, including relatives, neighbors, ex-spouses, and her children, and the judge may allow evidence of past incidents involving alleged abuse, arson, and a shooting in Minnesota. Hartsfield has pleaded not guilty, saying, “If I’m guilty of anything, it’s picking horrible husbands.”
Sarah Hartsfield’s trial is scheduled to begin on Tuesday with opening statements after jury selection, as mentioned by Click2Houston. Her bond was reduced from $5 million to $2 million, but the appeals court upheld that amount after her attorneys argued it was too high, as per KHOU. The trial will also address additional allegations made after her incarceration, such as claims she lied about having breast cancer and tampered with her son. Decisions on whether this evidence will be allowed are expected early in the trial, which could last up to three weeks. Judge Cain has approved one television camera in the courtroom.
