In a joint effort to improve the way medical staff respond to domestic violence, LA General Medical Center and the East Los Angeles Women’s Center premiered their training video, "Bridging the Gap", as reported by the County of Los Angeles. Aimed at empowering healthcare professionals to better recognize and assist those affected by intimate partner violence, the screening at LA General was followed by an expert panel discussion on connecting survivors with essential support services.
"Every day, our staff encounter patients whose lives have been shaped by intimate partner violence and trauma. 'Bridging the Gap' gives our teams the tools to act decisively, provide compassionate care, and connect survivors to the resources and options they need to get them on the path to safety and healing," CEO of LA General Medical Center Jorge Orozco told the County of Los Angeles. Designed to be utilized at the bedside, the video contains practical advice for dealing with disclosures of abuse and complements the hospital's unique approach to crisis intervention and rapid-response services.
According to the County of Los Angeles, Rebeca Melendes, the Director of Services at ELAWC, emphasized the critical role of healthcare providers in this public health issue: "Through this collaboration, we ensure survivors receive trauma-informed care and the resources they need to begin healing." The hospital's partnership with organizations like the Family Justice Center is part of its commitment to a service model unparalleled in the United States.
