Las Vegas City Council is preparing for a bit of an overhaul, and locals can get front-row seats to the changes. On Tuesday, September 30, at 9 a.m., the Council will convene for a special meeting that's shaping up to be more than just your average bureaucratic affair. You'll find council members and the public gathered at The Smith Center for the Performing Arts, a familiar venue for discussions of the city's future, but perhaps less so for civic administration.
On the agenda is the official swearing-in of Kara Kelley, who's stepping into the shoes of Ward 2 interim Councilwoman. Kelley, with her deep-cut credentials as the former president and CEO of the Las Vegas Chamber and vice chair of the Colorado River Commission, was tapped for the role at the September 17 meeting. Her tenure is a bookmark in the city's political narrative, lasting only until voters chisel out a more permanent name in either the 2026 Primary or General elections, according to the city's announcement.
Kelley’s swearing-in isn’t the only focus of the special council meeting. Afterward, the Council will hold a public session to review and set priorities for the city. Unlike closed-door meetings, this session invites public input. Residents can submit comments online until 5 p.m. on September 29 through the city’s council comment page or attend in person to share their views during the public comment period. For those keen to see what's on the docket ahead of time, details are up for grabs on the city's website.
