The landscape of downtown Las Vegas has officially transformed with the opening of the Las Vegas Civic Center and the Carolyn G. Goodman Plaza. The inauguration day was marked by a ceremonial ribbon-cutting event attended by city officials, including Mayor Shelley Berkley, council members, and former mayors Oscar and Carolyn G. Goodman, the latter being the plaza's namesake.

According to News 3 Las Vegas, the Civic Center spans an entire block at 525 S. Main St. and features space that will host a myriad of purposes, including restaurants and an art gallery. The Goodman Plaza alongside is set to become downtown's hub for art and cultural gatherings, expecting to be the venue for future festivals and performances.

Costing $190 million, this expansive new complex consolidates several essential services and city departments, aiming to economize operations by bringing over 1,000 city employees together under one roof. "Most cities in the United States have a civic plaza; now the city of Las Vegas has one," Mayor Berkley told 8 News Now. The complex also offers 250,000 square feet of lease space intended for a variety of uses.

In the evening following the opening, "The Voice" alum Jessica Manalo performed at a free concert at the plaza, as per a social media post by the City of Las Vegas. The excitement doesn't stop there, as more events are scheduled throughout the month, such as live music, a meet and greet with local artists, and the Grand Opening Celebration on September 20, which will feature live performances, food vendors, and activities for families.

As part of its new offerings, the civic center campus will house entities like the Vegas Chamber, Workforce Connection, and the Secretary of State's office, enhancing the convenience for residents and businesses looking to engage with the city. "We've brought all of the city services under one roof, so you don't have to go to this building and that building and another building to get your job done with the city, no matter what it is," Berkley said in a statement obtained by 8 News Now. Upcoming celebrations at Goodman Plaza include free performances like Paige and The Overtones, and opportunities to interact with local artists who have contributed artworks to the new civic center.
