Mourning and calls for peace echoed through the Student Union Courtyard of UNLV last Friday, as students and members of the Las Vegas community came together for a vigil honoring the late Charlie Kirk, conservative influencer and founder of Turning Point USA. According to FOX5 Vegas, the gathering was organized by the UNLV Republicans and featured a lineup of faith leaders and speakers who reflected on Kirk's impact and legacy.
At the vigil, speakers urged attendants to maintain calm and, as one of them said, "We all need to be peacekeepers and all need to be children of God in a situation like this. And as the speaker said before, one man is gone, a great man is gone, but this gives us the power to all rise-up to hopefully the level of man that Charlie was." This message was shared by a participant and reported by FOX5 Vegas. Students were also offered the opportunity to engage with representatives from Turning Point USA.
The backdrop of this somber event was heightened security, as several law enforcement officers were stationed around the courtyard prior to the start of the vigil. As noted by News3LV, an online notice ahead of the event called for unity and respectful dialogue, stating, "This will be a time to come together as a community, reflect on our shared values, and stand united against political violence while promoting respectful dialogue."
The Nevada Youth Coalition, Nevada College Republicans and Turning Point USA, all had their logos included in the notices for the event, signifying their collective stance against the recent tragedy. Kirk's life was abruptly ended by gunfire while he was speaking at an event at Utah Valley University in Orem. In the aftermath, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson was taken into custody on suspicion of the fatal shooting, a development confirmed by law enforcement officials in Utah and reported by News3LV.
