Los Angeles County will be a hotbed of labor activism this Labor Day as "Workers Over Billionaires" rallies sweep across multiple neighborhoods. Today's demonstrations, orchestrated by May Day Strong—a collaboration of labor, political, and environmental groups—are set to focus on halting the influence of billionaires on government and a wide array of social issues. According to information provided by FOXLA, protests are expected in places like Culver City, Long Beach, and a dozen more Los Angeles County communities.
In a statement obtained by NBC Los Angeles, May Day Strong detailed their demands, including the defense of Medicaid, Social Security, calls for fully funding schools and healthcare, and cessation of attacks on vulnerable communities. Fevering around 4:30 p.m. at Elysian Park, The People's Block Party is among the numerous events, providing a mix of music, speakers, and communal activities.
The centerpiece is the 46th Annual Labor Day Parade in Wilmington conducted by the Los Angeles/Long Beach Harbor Labor Coalition, featuring a parade and a picnic with family-friendly activities, labor guest speakers, and the introduction of elected officials. Running for governor, former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa is set to attend, riding with the District Council of Ironworkers, as Kristal Romero, press secretary of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, told NBC Los Angeles.
“Working people built this nation and we know how to take care of each other. We won’t back down—we will never stop fighting for our families and the rights and freedoms that ensure access to opportunity and a better life for all Americans. The billionaire’s time is up," organizers said in a statement obtained by KTLA. Participants are urged to gather not only at parades and rallies, but also outside corporate offices and congressional buildings to amplify their demands.
