This Sunday, Mount Mary University becomes a canvas for local creativity as the Make Art MKE event takes over the campus grounds, nestled at 2900 Menomonee River Parkway. Slated for September 7 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., attendees can witness over 150 artists and artisans exhibit everything from fine art to handmade goods, according to the City of Milwaukee press release from the office of 5th District Alderman Lamont Westmoreland.
The outdoor gathering is not just a showcase but also a tribute to Mount Mary Starving Artists' Show's enduring legacy in the community. Alderman Westmoreland emphasized the event's commitment to this grassroots tradition, saying, "The Mount Mary Starving Artists' Show was a longtime staple of the community, but in recent years Make Art MKE has stepped up to honor the history of the Mount Mary event, while working with local makers to showcase their talent and support the surrounding community,” underscoring its significance beyond a mere marketplace, as stated by the City of Milwaukee.
Make Art MKE, which forges ahead come rain or come sunshine, is sponsored by re:Craft and Relic and Lit MKE, collaborations suggesting an intertwining of history, literature, and hands-on craft. The event is as much a feast for the senses with local food trucks peppering the area with savory invites as it is a celebration of creativity. A portion of the day's earnings is earmarked for enhancements to Cooper Park and to foster art programming at Milwaukee German Immersion School, as per the City of Milwaukee press release.
