A fire that began in a single unit at a southwest Houston apartment complex escalated last night, eventually affecting 16 apartments. The incident occurred around 7 p.m. near Dumfries and Black Sandpiper Drive, where crews worked to contain the blaze despite the equipment issue.
According to reports from ABC13, the fire's rapid spread was partly due to the fire truck's pump issue which temporarily thwarted firefighting efforts. It was a neighbor, Debbie Meyers, who said, "The fire kept spreading and spreading. All of a sudden, you could hear the glass break. I was like, 'Wow.' And you could see them, they were trying to push the people away, but there were so many people in the front."
The Houston Fire Department has not yet disclosed the exact nature of the pump malfunction. Despite the challenges and the extensive damage to the property, there were no reported injuries. An investigation to assess the cause and the extent of the damage is currently underway.
Separate coverage from Click2Houston highlights that the first responders encountered the defective pump, which forced them to have to wait for additional resources. This delay allowed the electrical fire to rapidly expand to additional units within an estimated 10 minutes. The Ashford Casa Serena Apartments, where the conflagration occurred, are now at the center of this event, and officials are working diligently to provide support to those affected.
