Maryland's job landscape took a hit last month with a notable drop in positions across various sectors. A recent labor report details an overall decrease of 3,200 jobs in August, which were split between the private and public sectors, Fox Baltimore reported. The U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics pinpointed the loss of 2,000 private sector jobs and a decrease of 1,200 in public sector employment; notably, the public sector's loss included a substantial 2,500 federal jobs, which have been dwindling since January, adding up to a significant 15,100 job downturn.
Despite the employment dip, some sectors saw growth such as construction which acquired 2,700 new jobs, while accommodation and food services weren't too far behind with an addition of 1,400 positions, but sectors like administrative and support services and other services weren't as fortunate as they lost 1,900 and 1,700 jobs, respectively; the data from BLS paints this mixed narrative of gains and setbacks, CBS News Baltimore reported.
As for Maryland's standing compared to national statistics, the state's joblessness rose just slightly from 3.4% to 3.6% which still manages to rest below the national unemployment rate of 4.3% and when it comes to job growth since the start of the Moore-Miller administration, Maryland secured 96,000 jobs, a rate that outpaces the nation, according to FOX Baltimore.
