In a move set to modernize and improve the flow of traffic in Mecklenburg County, the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) has awarded an $8.7 million contract for major roadwork on a key stretch of Idlewild Road. Linking smoothly into local infrastructure plans, this development is aimed at easing the growing transportation woes of the area.
The contract, won by J.T. Russell and Sons Inc., encompasses widening a half-mile section of Idlewild Road to create a four-lane divided highway, spanning from the junction with Interstate 485 to Stallings Road, as per North Carolina Department of Transportation's announcement. Additionally, a noteworthy element of the upgrade includes realigning Stallings Road to intersect further from I-485 and installing a dual lane roundabout to bolster safety and traffic efficiency.
Emphasising pedestrian welfare, the upgrade plan also features the addition of sidewalks and crosswalks, facilitating safer foot traffic. According to North Carolina Department of Transportation, work can commence as early as the end of this month, weather allowing. Completion is on the horizon for fall 2026, although the final touches to vegetation may extend into spring 2027.
For those concerned about possible traffic snags, North Carolina Department of Transportation promises to keep disruptions to a minimum. Lane closures are anticipated but will be relegated to off-peak hours, Monday through Friday. Commuters can breathe easy knowing that "all travel lanes are expected to be open during morning and afternoon commutes." Those seeking up-to-the-minute traffic updates can find solace in technology, by visiting DriveNC.gov or keeping tabs on NCDOT's social media channels for real-time travel information.
