The City of Mexia has recently received a badge of honor in the shape of the Tourism Friendly Texas Certified Community designation, recognized by Travel Texas after a comprehensive certification process. Highlighting Mexia's commitment to developing tourism as a key element of their economic growth strategy, this achievement looks to boost local job creation and attract visitors from far and wide. According to a release from Governor Greg Abbott’s office, he congratulated Mexia, emphasizing the critical role tourism plays within local and state economies, generating considerable economic impact and supporting an impressive number of jobs across Texas.
"Travelers to and within Texas generate almost $200 billion in annual economic impact and support 1.3 million jobs across the state," stated Abbott in the release of the Office of the Texas Governor. He goes on to encourage other Texas communities to seek the designation in order to expand local tourism opportunities and job creation. Senator Charles Schwertner and Representative Angelia Orr also shared the sentiment, applauding Mexia for its warm hospitality and heritage, which contribute to its status as a valued destination.
As an economic development organization, the Mexia Economic Development Corporation, led by Executive Director Stacey Bush, recognizes the significance of attracting visitors. In a statement reported by the Office of the Texas Governor, Bush noted that this not only lends support to local businesses but also paves the way for substantial long-term investments within the community.
The Tourism Friendly Texas Certified Community program provides a pathway for local governments or non-profit organizations involved in tourism promotion and development to strengthen relationships and identify strategies beneficial for tourism growth. The program also serves an educational role, informing local leaders about tourism's importance to the state. Mayor Geary Smith told the Governor’s office, "We’re excited to welcome more visitors to experience our rich heritage, vibrant music culture, and small-town charm with big-hearted people."
