A Mexican national, Esteban Lopez-Juarez, has been sentenced to a two-year federal prison term for illegal reentry into the United States, a breach of U.S. immigration law. The U.S. District Judge Richard A. Lazzara issued the sentence following Lopez-Juarez's guilty plea on July 1. The case unfolded after the 39-year-old was arrested and charged with driving under the influence on March 16, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Florida.
Lopez-Juarez's history of illegal entry spans across multiple deportations from the period of 2012 to 2019. He had not obtained authorization from immigration authorities to reenter the country prior to being found this year. It was revealed that this instance marks his fourth conviction for the same offense. The case was thoroughly investigated by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO), aiming to rigorously enforce immigration laws.
The prosecution for this case was led by Assistant United States Attorney Jeff Chang. His work ties into the broader effort known as Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative to significantly reduce illegal immigration. The program's objectives include dismantling cartels and transnational criminal organizations, alongside a push to safeguard communities from violent crime. This initiative collaborates closely with the Department’s Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces and Project Safe Neighborhood.
