With the October 1 state budget deadline approaching, Michigan lawmakers face the possibility of a government shutdown if no agreement is reached. A shutdown could stop road work, close state parks, and pause services at Secretary of State offices. Lawmakers are also deciding whether to continue free school meals for public school students.

According to WXYZ, Troy School District Superintendent Richard Machesky said the district plans to return to offering free and reduced lunch only for families who qualify under federal guidelines, ending free meals for all students. Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Democrats want to continue funding universal free meals, with Whitmer saying, "I think if we don't do that, we run the risk of some kids having access to meals and others not," while Republicans, including state Rep. John Roth, suggest increasing per-pupil funding so districts can decide how to spend it.

FOX 2 Detroit reported that businesses, especially those selling alcohol, could be affected by the shutdown since they may not be able to order liquor. Public utilities and other services could also be disrupted. Governor Gretchen Whitmer emphasized the importance of the free meals program by serving meals to students at Hamilton Early Childhood Center and said, "When our kids are hungry it's nearly impossible to learn," as mentioned by WWMT .She also mentioned past bipartisan budget agreements and noted that she has signed six balanced budgets. Michigan residents are waiting for the legislature’s decision.
