School is back in a big way in Michigan. For the past three years, school bells have been ringing more frequently for kids all across the state. According to the Michigan Department of Education, there's a robust uptick in attendance rates and a steady stream of youngsters hitting the books.
Michigan State Superintendent Dr. Michael F. Rice served up the details, saying, per the Michigan Department of Education, "We are pleased that the statewide school attendance rate and the chronic absenteeism rate have improved significantly for the third year in a row." As per the MDE, attendance rates are up from 88.8% in the 21-'22 academic year to 91.3% in 2024-25. That's a whole 2.5 percentage points higher. Chronic absenteeism rates have also taken a dive, from a high of 38.5% a few years back to a lower 27.9%.
This isn't just a matter of tossing figures around; these numbers reflect real improvements. Dr. Rice noted the prolonged effort that went into achieving these results, crediting school staff, students, parents, grandparents, and community members for their steadfast commitment. But even as progress shines through, he reminded that attendance hasn't yet climbed back to pre-pandemic levels. Work remains, and collaboration continues to be key in pushing the importance of showing up to school front and center.
There's an unfortunate edge to this success story, though. The gap between economically disadvantaged students and their peers when it comes to absenteeism is still troublingly wide. While the percentage of those students who were chronically absent saw a 1.5 percentage point improvement last school year, according to MDE, it sat at 38.6% compared to a statewide average of 27.9%. Clearly, the playing field isn't quite level yet.
Local school districts aren't resting on their laurels. They've been getting creative, from making house calls to holding conferences and providing mental health support. MDE has backed them up, implementing systems like the Early Warning Intervention and Monitoring System and linking schools with national efforts to improve attendance rates.
