Michigan drivers are finding a reason to breathe a little easier at the pump, as state gas prices have taken a notable 14-cent dip over the past week. AAA - The Auto Group announced that the average price for regular unleaded gasoline now stands at $3.03 per gallon, which is down 35 cents from last month and 44 cents lower than the same time the previous year, as reported by The Detroit News.
AAA's spokesperson, Adrienne Woodland, told WZZM 13, "Drivers across Michigan are seeing lower prices at the pump with many metro areas seeing averages below $3 a gallon." Despite the increase in demand mentioned, the prices continued their downward trend, offering a small respite for motorists across the state. Although the decrease comes amid rising gasoline demand, the usual price for a 15-gallon tank of gas is hovering around $45.
In greater detail, GasBuddy pointed out that within the city of Detroit, gas prices have fallen by an average of 8 cents per gallon in the last week, now sitting at around $3.06. When looking at a broader perspective, according to further information from Upper Michigan’s Source, the national average gas price has also seen a decrease, contrasting Michigan's lower average, with the nation’s figures tallying $3.14 per gallon.
On the supply side, there was a slight decrease in the total domestic gasoline supply, dropping from 217.6 million barrels to 216.6 million, according to the Energy Information Administration records. Meanwhile, Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, remarked in a release that "Price cycling markets led the way with significant declines in Ohio, Florida, and Michigan," and highlighted the presence of "seasonal factors" as the main driver of current price reductions – closely monitoring for any potential disruptions, per The Detroit News.
Focusing on specific locales within Michigan, the most expensive gas price averages include Ann Arbor at $3.14, Metro Detroit at $3.11, and Saginaw at $2.98. Offering more budget-friendly fueling options, Jackson, Traverse City, and Lansing boast averages of $2.89, $2.89, and $2.91, respectively. Noteworthy is the fact that in the Upper Peninsula, Upper Michigan’s Source reports an average of $2.96 per gallon in Delta and Marquette Counties, while Mackinac County sees the highest average at $3.39.
