The National Weather Service confirmed three tornadoes in Michigan on Monday, bringing the state’s total to 33 so far in 2025. WWMT reported that this makes 2025 one of the top five most active tornado years since records began in 1950. The tornadoes were reported in Torch Lake, Bellaire, and western Grand Traverse County.
According to MLive, the first tornado of the day was a brief EF-U near Lake Ann, with unclear peak winds and a path about 500 feet long. A video captured the tornado around 4:50 p.m. Another tornado, starting as a waterspout, moved across Torch Lake but caused no reported damage. The strongest was an EF-1 tornado in Bellaire, which lasted about two minutes and did not result in injuries or damage.
Michigan has seen several tornadoes this year, but none have reached EF-2 strength or higher, as mentioned by CBS News Detroit. Tornadoes have occurred in every month except January, with the first December tornado recorded on December 23, 2015. In Antrim County, a recent tornado moved over Torch Lake and turned into a waterspout. The National Weather Service is continuing to survey the tornadoes to confirm their strength and paths.
