The Michigan State Police, per a recent campaign announcement, is sounding the alarm on the pervasive threat of online sexual predators who are using the internet's vastness to target children. Col. James F. Grady II of the MSP warned that "tens of thousands of predators" lurk online, putting any child who ventures onto the web at risk. Grady emphasized the urgency of educating children about these dangers, as reported by the Michigan State Police.

Under the "Opening the Door" initiative by the Michigan Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force, the campaign's objective is to heighten awareness of predatory tactics such as grooming and sextortion and to spur conversations within families about safe digital navigation. As the initiative unrolls a video PSA, funded by federal money and set to circulate on social media platforms through December, parents are being called upon to establish internet safety plans that include parental controls and open dialogue with their children.

Highlighting the importance of education in this digital defense, MSP's Capt. Lizabeth Rich advised parents to "create a plan for internet use that includes parental controls." Rich recommended maintaining open communication channels regarding online hazards and staying informed on reporting procedures for suspicious online behavior. Parents and guardians are encouraged to report any child sexual exploitation or potential abuse incidents to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children’s (NCMEC) CyberTipline through their website or the provided hotline.
