A tragic series of events unfolded Tuesday night in Milwaukee, when a driver, fleeing from police, violently crashed into a family's car, resulting in the deaths of a West Allis mother and her two sons. WISN 12 News identified the deceased as 50-year-old Pler Moo, 15-year-old Kar Lah Kri Moo, and 21-year-old Moo Nay Taw. The police chase commenced shortly after 9:30 p.m., and the fleeing stolen Jeep ran a red light, crashing into the Moo family's car who were reportedly returning home from a soccer game. Mayor Cavalier Johnson condemned the reckless actions of the fleeing driver, stating, "Their lives are gone because somebody made two terrible decisions."
The aftermath of the incident saw the local community rally in grief and support for the displaced family. Surveillance footage captured the stolen Jeep running the red light and colliding with the victims' vehicle. As reported by FOX6Now, the Moo family were refugees from Thailand who had resettled in Milwaukee in 2011. In the wake of the crash, makeshift memorials burgeoned at the scene, with public expressions of sorrow evident among the gathered mourners. The incident has prompted discussions on police pursuit policies, with Milwaukee Police Association President Alex Ayala defending the officers' decision to engage in the chase, stating, "The officers are just trying to do their job," as per WISN.
More poignant details of the victims' lives and the community's reaction were shared at a vigil Wednesday evening, as captured by CBS 58. The Moo family, of the Karen ethnic group in Myanmar, had lived in a refugee camp in Thailand before coming to the United States. Family members lauded Pler Moo as a "very hardworking" mother, heartbreaking sentiments that echoed among the over 100 family and friends gathered to mourn the loss of their loved ones. "Right now, we just feel sadness. There are no other words to describe it. Just grief," Mook Wah, niece to Pler Moo and cousin to the sons, told CBS 58.
The driver of the stolen Jeep had a criminal past, including a previous arrest for fleeing police and causing a death. He also ran from police in Indiana just weeks before the Milwaukee crash. Despite the tragic outcome, there’s a strong call to keep enforcing the law and hold reckless drivers accountable, as per CBS 58.
