New Yorkers might want to keep their umbrellas close and their beach plans on hold as the National Weather Service forecasts a mix of sun and stormy weather across the boroughs this week, with a particular note for beachgoers about high rip current risks affecting areas including Kings (Brooklyn), Southwest Suffolk, Southeast Suffolk, Southern Queens, and Southern Nassau through Wednesday evening. Brooklyn is expected to see a high near 80 degrees today, with chances of showers and thunderstorms later in the evening, and similar conditions are in the forecast for Manhattan, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island.
The forecast for Sunday in New York City is mostly sunny, with high near 78 to 79 degrees in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx, while Staten Island will be slightly cooler at 77 degrees. Brooklyn and Queens may see a 30 percent chance of showers after 2 p.m. Wednesday, with up to a quarter inch of rain possible, especially if thunderstorms develop.
The NWS Hazardous Weather Outlook has not issued any hazardous weather warnings, but a High Rip Current Risk is in effect, urging swimmers to avoid the ocean at several beaches.
As the week continues, Manhattan and the Bronx can expect cloudy skies and scattered thunderstorms, while Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island will see a mix of clouds and sun. Rainfall could total up to half an inch by Friday, with drier conditions likely returning for the weekend.
