The colossal Gordie Howe International Bridge, nearing completion at a hefty 98%, is set to enhance connectivity between Detroit and Windsor, as reported by The Detroit Free Press. The remaining tasks include landscaping and the installation of vital systems such as electrical, fire suppression, and drainage, says Heather Grondin, chief relations officer of the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority, as detailed to The Detroit Free Press. No official opening date has been provided, an emphasis is being placed on ensuring all is in working order, through rigorous testing and adjustments as necessary.

Grondin explains the bridge will boast 164 streetlights and around 5,000 aesthetic lights lighting the bridge deck and cables,, which began testing on Aug. 29 and Sept. 18 respectively, with the testing for the tower's lights kicking off on Sept. 26 as stated by The Detroit Free Press. Additionally, RFIDs are being introduced for smoother toll transactions at the Canadian port of entry, Grondin revealed in an interview with The Detroit Free Press. The project, a multibillion-dollar venture which kicked off in December 2020, now witnesses its final phase.

In a statement obtained by CBS Detroit, the bridge was lauded for its design to enhance good transportation, with provisions for a total of six lanes along its 1.5-mile length and 60 primary inspection lanes. "All tolling will be done at the Canadian side of the border. Eight in each direction," Grondin stated. An added advantage for the locals comes in the form of toll-free pedestrian and bike pathways. The date for toll pricing is yet to be announced, with the expectation that the bridge's completion will allow travelers to journey from Montreal to Florida without encountering a single traffic light, according to CBS Detroit.

Set to rival the historic Ambassador Bridge and streamline traffic away from city streets, the Gordie Howe Bridge is an effort that encapsulates bilateral harmony, as it has witnessed robust cooperation between the US and Canada, as Heather Grondin told clickondetroit. Grondin praised the collaboration stating "It's a really good example of collaboration and the positive outcomes of working together to identify a solution to the problem of moving goods through this corridor," and while an exact date has not been provided, the bridge is expected to be completed by the end of the year. With direct highway access, the bridge aims to move trucks efficiently across the border and is amidst coordination with US Border Control agencies for handling over the U.S. ports, as reported by clickondetroit.
