St. Johns County residents might notice the flow of traffic is smoother at the intersection of U.S. 1 and Pine Island Road, thanks to a newly operational traffic signal and intersection enhancements. The works, which include additional turning lanes, have been completed to ease the commutes and increase safety.

The state-funded $2.8 million project started in early 2024 with the implementation of a turning lane on U.S. 1 and the introduction of signalized left-turn and right-turn lanes on Pine Island Road, per a statement from St. Johns County Public Works. Unable to access Stratton Road now through traffic, drivers can however, take advantage of a U-turn area located just to the north on U.S. 1.

Chris Gatchell, St. Johns County Public Works Project Manager, highlighted the importance of the improvements, saying, "Adding the light provides key improvements to the intersection for residents." This statement underscores the commitment to enhance the local transportation infrastructure for the public's benefit.

Funded by the State of Florida and St. Johns County Public Works, the project included land acquisition and various agreements with the Florida East Coast Railway for synchronization, an included agreement with FDOT for the signal work, in addition to drainage improvements to support new lanes on both roadways.

Indeed, this project forms part of a larger scheme by the Public Works Department to alleviate congestion on St. Johns County roads. The community, as they navigate the improved crossroads, is set to experience the difference these advancements aim to make in the day-to-day traffic fluidity.
