New York Governor Kathy Hochul has thrown her political weight behind Zohran Mamdani in the NYC mayoral race. In a striking endorsement published Sunday in the opinion section of The New York Times, Hochul acknowledged the shared goals between herself and Mamdani, including a commitment to making New York City more affordable and safe, as well as combating antisemitism with urgency, as reported by Gothamist.

Hochul's backing came as a surprise given the previous hesitancy of centrists in the party to support Mamdani's progressive platform, which includes introducing a $30 minimum wage and increasing taxes on the wealthiest. Her endorsement suggests that Democrats might be ready to rally behind the assemblyman's vision for a city grappling with the economic and social challenges of the day, aligning themselves with a movement that Mamdani asserts is "only growing stronger," as he remarked in a statement obtained by The Guardian.

In the wake of Mamdani's victory over Andrew Cuomo in the recent Democratic primary and his substantial leads in the polls, prominent progressives like Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have come forward with endorsements. Mamdani, age 33, is ahead of his nearest competitors, including Cuomo and incumbent mayor Eric Adams, both of whom are running as independents, and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa.

Hochul, who is up for re-election herself next year, has positioned herself as a fighter against President Donald Trump's agenda and is clearly aligning with Mamdani on this front. "Zohran Mamdani and I will both be fearless in confronting the president’s extreme agenda — with urgency, conviction, and the defiance that defines New York," Hochul wrote, according to the Gothamist report.

Although Governor Hochul and others have endorsed Mamdani, he still faces challenges. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer have not endorsed any candidate. Mamdani has also drawn attention for his criticism of Israel’s actions in Gaza, which may be affecting support from some Democrats.
