The warm glow of community spirit came to life in Noble County with the opening of the Legendary Adventure Zone, a playground designed to unite children of all abilities in play. This inclusive space, launched on July 8 at Belle Valley Community Park, stands as a testament to the power of collaborative effort, featuring the Ohio State University College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES) and the Ohio State University Extension as key contributors. According to OSU news, the playground offers a range of ADA-compliant facilities such as an Expression Adaptive Swing Seat, Zero-G Swing Seat, an inclusive whirl, and sensory-friendly features, all under welcoming shaded areas.
The idea sparked from the wishes of a mother, Amanda Myers, for her son with autism to have a place where he could play without barriers. This need resonated with the community and sparked a chain of events, materializing into the playground that now offers laughter and connection for all children. Gloria Llewellyn, superintendent and CEO of the Boards of Developmental Disabilities for Belmont, Harrison, and Noble counties, crystallized the sentiment, stating via OSU news, "This project began with one brave and loving mother who envisioned a space where her child with autism — and every child in Noble County — could laugh, play and belong." These inclusive efforts were underlined with financial support from various community stakeholders, including a significant investment for playground equipment funded by the Noble County Board of Developmental Disabilities and aid from the Marathon Community Investment Program, as highlighted by OSU news.
Dawn Schultheis from Ohio State Extension in Noble County played a pivotal role in bringing community and business leaders together to support this cause. Schultheis and her team secured crucial donations of materials and labor, vital for constructing aspects of the playground, such as the food court and grandparent swing area. Their work demonstrates how listening and responding to community needs can secure the resources necessary for impactful initiatives.
More than a mere play area, the Legendary Adventure Zone is a harbinger for inclusive public spaces bolstering community resilience, particularly in rural areas where retaining young families can be challenging. Llewellyn spoke to the grander vision, stating via OSU news, "This is more than a playground. It sends a message to families that their children belong and are welcome to participate fully in community life." The project, supported by numerous community businesses, families, and organizations, received grants and financial contributions from DWA Recreation/GameTime and other local agencies. The community's response has been enthusiastic, with Myers remarking on the "so much support, love and prayers" received, affirming the strength and determination of families with special needs children and the essential nature of inclusive community support systems.
