A significant water main break on 14 Mile Road in Novi, Michigan, has led to a cascade of disruptions throughout the region, from school closures to a boil water advisory affecting tens of thousands of residents. As detailed by CBS News Detroit, the incident occurred early Thursday morning and has primarily been linked to a 42-inch transmission line that is part of the Great Lakes Water Authority network.
Field service crews were promptly dispatched to the scene to begin repair work, which, due to the main's substantial size, is expected to take several hours before water service can be reinstated. During that period, the city has announced that a boil water advisory will be enforced for all the affected areas. Moreover, as FOX 2 Detroit reports, areas surrounding Novi, including Walled Lake and Commerce Township, are also experiencing low water pressure or no water at all, consequently leading to the closure of 14 Mile Road in both directions just west of M-5 and impacting the daily routines of local inhabitants and commuters.
Addressing the closures, several schools in the vicinity have had to shutter their doors for the day—Detroit Catholic Central High School, Hickory Woods Elementary, and Novi Christian Academy, among others—as highlighted by CBS News Detroit, signaling a palpable disruption in educational services. Detroit Catholic Central High advised students to look out for assignments online, indicating an impromptu transition to remote learning in light of the circumstances.
Moreover, the impact extends beyond educational facilities, with Audacy reporting that Henry Ford Providence Novi Hospital and Henry Ford Medical Center – Columbus have had to adopt emergency measures such as utilizing bottled water, avoiding the usage of sinks, and ensuring that patient care is not compromised. Sheryl Walsh-Molloy, Novi City Spokeswoman, said, "It's a GLWA transmission main. They are on site, their field service crews, working alongside our public works team, to isolate the break," demonstrating the integrated response effort between local and state resources.
