At The Ohio State University, a poignant ritual took place at the Lacrosse Stadium in remembrance of a U.S. Navy special warfare operator and the school's own alumnus. During the annual Major Lawrence Miller Flag Ceremony, ROTC students gathered to retire old flags and hoist new ones across the campus, an act of respect for military students, veterans, and their families.
The ceremony, honoring the legacy of two-time Ohio State graduate Major Lawrence Miller, involves the replacement of numerous flags, many of which vary in size and the manner they are displayed. Jim Miller, president of the National Veterans Leadership Foundation and son of Lawrence Miller, acknowledged the diversity and significance of these flags. In a statement obtained by OSU News, he said, "There’s one thing that they hold in common, which is the need to be cherished and to be flying with dignity."
This year's reflective gathering honored the memory of Stephen "Tyler" Murphy by dedicating and raising a new flag on the pole named after him. Murphy, a decorated serviceman and Ohio State alumnus who passed away in 2022, remains a figure of influence and reverence within the Buckeye lacrosse program for his illustrious yet humble service.
The tributes poured in, with Nick Myers, the men's lacrosse team's head coach, expressing the Murphy family's gratitude for this recognition. "Murph was a humble warrior. He would talk in our locker room about the walk of the humble warrior. He had a servant heart. He loved his country. He loved to serve, and he loved to give. He gave everything he had," Myers said, according to an OSU News interview. The southeast entrance flagpole of the Lacrosse Stadium, now christened the Tyler Murphy Flagpole, stands as a legacy to his life of extraordinary commitment and sacrifice.
