In the Chambers County courtroom, Sarah Hartsfield is on trial for the alleged murder of her husband, Joseph Hartsfield. The first witness, Helen Hartsfield, said her son was "outgoing and full of life" and usually managed his diabetes well. Prosecutors said the couple had conflicts over money and time with family, noting that "Joseph’s family once admired Sarah," before problems arose. They said Sarah delayed seeking medical help while Joseph had very low blood sugar, according to KHOU.
The defense said Joseph Hartsfield’s death was caused by his own health issues. Attorney Case Darwin said Joseph "was hospitalized three times for diabetic ketoacidosis" before he died and that he was using a continuous glucose monitor on the day of his last episode, as reported by KHOU. They said Sarah Hartsfield, who was recovering from surgery and taking narcotics, did not act quickly because she was in shock, not because of malice.
In the trial, the prosecution said that "evidence will show Joseph’s glucose alarms sounded for hours, but Vargas stalled for at least an hour before calling 911" during his diabetic incident. The defense said investigators did not fully check evidence, including "the 10 insulin pens reportedly found by the couple's bedside," and argued that Sarah’s actions, though "not good," do not amount to a crime, saying "failure to act is not a crime," as mentioned by KHOU. The trial will continue with over 80 potential witnesses and more evidence for jurors to review, as per Click2Houston.
