San Antonio and South-Central Texas veterans are set to receive a substantial increase in support thanks to over $7.7 million in grants awarded by the Texas Veterans Commission. This latest round of funding, announced by Governor Greg Abbott, is intended to provide vital services for the region's veteran community. The allocated funds will support a broad array of services spanning transportation, financial assistance, housing, and mental health care.
According to a statement released by the Office of the Texas Governor, Abbott emphasized the state's commitment to its veterans: "Texas will always honor the sacrifices of veterans who courageously served our country." The Funds for Veterans' Assistance (FVA) grants are expected to reach over 6,000 veterans and their families, touching 40 counties in the process. Laura Koerner, Chairwoman of TVC and a Navy veteran herself, expressed gratitude towards the award recipients for their service to fellow veterans.
The FVA grants support various organizations, including the Alamo Area Council of Governments, which received $600,000 split between transportation and housing services, and the Anger Solutions Network, which was awarded $30,000 for peer support services. Family Endeavors, Inc. is among the bigger recipients, securing a total of $950,000 for financial and clinical counseling assistance. The full list of recipients outlines a multitude of programs designed to address the diverse needs of veterans, including housing initiatives like the "Housing for Texas Heroes" and support for legal services through "Veterans Treatment Courts".
These grants represent a fraction of the wider support network established by the Texas Veterans Commission, which, since its inception, has channeled over $359 million toward veteran support through more than 1,600 FVA grants. The large-scale assistance is part of a broader commitment, which, Governor Abbott revealed in May, totals a record-breaking $46.3 million across Texas in the current grant cycle. Veterans in need can find resources from these programs directly through organizations in their area, with details accessible via the TVC's website. The grants are principally financed by designated Texas Lottery games and additional donations from vehicle registrations and hunting or fishing licenses.
As the awards were presented, Chairwoman Koerner highlighted the impact these organizations have on the lives of veterans — a sentiment that is mirrored in the widespread efforts of these programs to extend their reach. With the support flowing from the state down to organizations on the front lines, Texas exemplifies a practical commitment to those who have served, with San Antonio standing as a beacon of that ongoing endeavor.
