Kevin Hyun Ahn, the 31-year-old Pennsylvania man facing charges for the alleged murders of two people in Owings Mills, has been declared not competent to stand trial. A spokesperson from the Baltimore County State's Attorney's Office confirmed that Ahn is due to undergo further mental health evaluations at the Maryland Department of Health, as reported by WMAR2-News. According to the charging documents, Ahn is accused of strangling his mother, Hyun Ahn, and then driving to his sister's home with her body.
Complicating the already tragic case is the peculiar behavior Ahn displayed while in custody. Since his extradition, he has seemingly chosen to simultaneously ignore questions and not engage with his defense attorney, while also invoking his rights to remain silent and to free speech, according to a report by FOX Baltimore. In response to his mental state, Baltimore County Circuit Judge Judith Ensor ordered Ahn's transfer from the county detention center to a state treatment facility.
The case against Ahn involves the deaths of Yong Kim, 70, and Sun Tok Lim, 83, who were found dead in Lim's Owings Mills home with belts around their necks. Initially staged to appear as suicides, further investigation revealed signs of foul play. Authorities also noted that Ahn allegedly attempted to break into a safe and took Lim's wallet after the murders. He later allegedly strangled his mother using her necklace, hiding her body in the back of her vehicle before leaving a handwritten confession note at his sister's house in Pennsylvania. These findings are part of the charging documents cited by WMAR2-News.
The future of the trial hinges on Ahn's ability to comprehend and to effectively participate in his defense. As it stands, the trial has been put on hold, with a status conference set for January 8.
